Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve

Nagzira Tiger Reserve Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) is located in North East of Maharashtra state in Western India region. It is close from Nagpur city of state. It was declared as a 46th tiger reserve of India on 12/Dec/2013. It is spread over two districts of Maharashtra i.e. Gondia district and Bhandara district. Its total area is 1894.944 sq. kms which is divided between core area and buffer area. Travel distance from Kanha national park to Nagzira is just 180kms and road connectivity is good. After visiting Kanha national park, wildlife lovers often proceed to enjoy wildlife of Nagzira. Although Maharashtra is in West of India but this forest is part of Central India where it shares its boundary with Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh states. As we know that Tiger reserves often comprises more than one wildlife sanctuaries & protected area so here also we can find that Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve comprises Nawegaon National Park, Nawegaon Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary and Koka Wildlife Sanctuary. This tiger reserve connected with many surrounding tiger reserves like Pench, Kanha, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve,Indravati Tiger Reserve etc. Such wildlife corridor play vital role in movements of wild animals and maintaining genepool or genetic diversity.

It is a scenic forest with variety of landscapes, fresh air. It has great potential from biodiversity conservation point of view. Here we can do the jungle sfari to stroll through this beautiful forest. This forest lies in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra which is known as arid zone but due to presence of this green forest, it acts like "Green-lung" for adjoining region having human settlement. Here we can find more than 210 bird species in which some are local migrants, trans-india migrants, winter visitors. Here we can find more than 35 species of mammals in which prominent ones are Tiger, Leopard, Indian Gaur, Wild Boar, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Common Giant Flying Squirrel, Small Indian Civet, Palm Civet, Indian Wolf, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Four Horned Antelope, Sambar, Dhole, Blue Bull etc. Similarly we can find more than 37 species of reptiles belonging to 11 families out of which about 06 species of endangered status like Indian Cobra, Russel Viper, Indian Rock Python, Checkered Keelback and Common Monitor etc.

Here we can find varying forest type which includes Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest which includes dry mixed forests to moist forest type. These trees are of high economic value, medicinal quality, aromatic and some ornamental plant species like Team, Bhel, Bhor, Haldu, Jamun, Kawat etc.

How to reach
This tiger reserve can be reached easily by all means of transport like by air, train and by road. Those who are on wildlife photography trips and covering multiple wildlife destinations, may include Nagzira visit also in their tour as it is surrounded by some most popular national parks like Kanha national park (180kms), Pench National Park (200kms), Tadoba National Park (190kms).
